Given the potential adverse consequences of seizures, it is very important that patients with refractory seizures know what to do in order to protect their safety and well-being. Epilepsy.com has an extensive section called "Seizure Preparedness" (http://www.epilepsy.com/101/101_preparedness) that guides patients, with inputs from their physicians, to help them learn to manage seizures and prevent problems and emergencies from developing. They are introduced to tools and resources that help them assess risks, observe and record seizures, and keep track of medicines and other healthcare needs. They develop a Seizure Plan, including an individualized plan for seizure first aid.
