Epilepsy and Female Reproductive Milestones: Topics Spanning a Lifetime

Program Objectives

In summary, this program:

  • Describe the effects of ovarian hormones on epileptogenesis, including the seizure threshold, and the association of seizure patterns with the menstrual cycle
  • Identify potential drug to drug interactions between antiepileptic drugs and other medications
  • Discuss the incidence and pathogenesis of higher rates of infertility, reproductive endocrine disorders, and overall sexual dysfunction in women with epilepsy
  • Discuss the evidence for teratogenicity and cognitive dysfunction in the offspring of women with epilepsy receiving pharmacotherapy

Epilepsy presents complex health issues for women at all stages of their lives, from puberty through menopause, especially during pregnancy. Yet, whereas a large body of research exists on the gender-specific features of this disorder, many gaps in knowledge still remain. This factor may explain why neurologists appear to lack important evidence-based guidelines for making treatment decisions. Practicing within the context of this constantly evolving field can be challenging; that is why a faculty of experts in both epileptology and women’s health have developed the series Epilepsy and Female Reproductive Milestones: Topics Spanning a Lifetime. Drawing on the existing literature and their extensive clinical experience, the faculty presents the diverse spectrum of issues relevant to each major reproductive milestone (ie, puberty, menses, pregnancy, and menopause) and how they may affect the patient with epilepsy.
